Strategic and technical expertise for decisions without an obvious answer

The problems we are asked to help with rarely sit in one department, one contract or one dataset. They involve people, assets, information and decisions that affect each other, and they need more than one kind of expertise to resolve, so our five services can be used on their own or together.

How we work across the five services

The shape of the work follows the problem, so not every engagement needs all five steps and some begin part-way through.

  1. The questionAgree the decision, the outcome that matters and where the difficulty really sits.
  2. The expertsWork with the people who know how the system behaves in practice.
  3. The modelRepresent the system at the level of detail the decision needs.
  4. The alternativesTest options before anyone commits, and find the real constraint.
  5. The changeCarry the chosen option into practice and measure what it does.

Some engagements start with a model, whilst others start with a decision that has to be made next month, where a short piece of structured advice is worth more than a detailed simulation. Historical data helps where it adds understanding or validation, but it is not a condition of starting.
